Abstract

Schumannianthus dichotomus, the matcane of tropical Asia is underexp'loited. The plant is cultivated
for the preparation of mats in the North-eastern parts of India. This fiber plant could prove to
be a great asset for the rural economy. The present investigation provides information on the
cultivation and economics of this neglected species.
