INDIAN MATCANE Schumannianthus dichotomus (ROXB.) GAGNEP AN UNDERUTILIZED FIBER PlANT OF INDIA

Abstract

Schumannianthus dichotomus, the matcane of tropical Asia is underexp'loited. The plant is cultivated
for the preparation of mats in the North-eastern parts of India. This fiber plant could prove to
be a great asset for the rural economy. The present investigation provides information on the
cultivation and economics of this neglected species.
